VI A. 식물상, 동물상. Flora & Fauna.

      화산섬이기에 모든 식물과 동물은 외부에서 들어 왔다. 3 W's (water, 물, winds, 바람, & wings, 날개)를 통해 자연적으로, 또는 인간이 들여 온 것들이다. 일단 들어오면 적응을 하게 되고; 외부에서 들여온 것들이 고유의 동식물을 멸망의 위험에 빠뜨린다.
     Because it is on a volcanic area, all of the plants and animals that are now present on the island were brought through pioneers or naturally (two thousand miles through the air or sea) 3 W's, water, winds, & wings. Once the organisms got there, they went under strange adaptations to make the species unique. More endangered species live in Haleakala National Park than any other national park in the United States. Once traveling to this part of the island became more frequent, native species were destroyed. One example is the Haleakala Silversword, which used to cover Haleakala Mountain to a degree where the mountain looked as if it were covered with snow.

  Double buttercup, 미나리아재비.
 ∧ Coconut bikini top.  코코넛으로 만든 브라자.


  

 ∧∧ Cacao, 카카오나무: its seeds produce chocolate or cocoa. 씨로 초콜렛이나 코코아를 만든다.
∧ Coffee plant. 커피나무.


   

Red ginger, 적 생강:

∧∧ Hibiscus, 하이비스커스 : 노란색의 하이비스커스는 하와이의 주화(州花).  The  Yellow  Hibiscus is  Hawaii State Flower.


  
∧∧ Kukui Tree or Candlenut tree and flower, 쿠쿠이 나무: 하와이 주의 나무(木)이다. 

     Hawaii State Tree.  Originally reserved for royalty in ancient times, the kukui nut was worn by the reigning chiefs and Kings of Hawaii.  Flowers: Kukui bears two kinds of flowers, the male (staminate) and female (pistillate) flowers, that are small with pale creamish white petals. The flowers are borne in large flower clusters (inflorescence) at ends of branches.


Date palm, 대추야자: 밑에 대추같은 것이 달려있다.
Traveler's palm, 여행자의 야자;
Red sealing wax palm, 붉은 밀랍을 분비하는 야자;


Pineapple, 파인애플 :
Sausage tree, 소시지나무:
∧ Silversword, 은검초 : 해바라기의 일종이며 7,000 feet이상의 높이서 자란 이곳의 원산 (native) 식물이다.  
    The rare cousin of the sunflower.  Native plant. Grows on 3 tallest peaks at elevations of 7,000 to 10,000 feet.  The dense covering of silvery hairs on the leaves helps conserve moisture and protect the plants from the intense, high-elevation sun.


  

∧ Sugarcane, 사탕수수.
∧ Hen & Chick, 닭과 병아리: 야외에서 먹으며 자라지만 밤에는 주인 집으로 돌아온다. 
    They are kept free outside but return back home in the evening.
