Route 66, "The Mother Road," carried travelers for 2,448miles between Chicago and Los Angeles from 1926 until the last stretch of road was decommissioned in Arizona in 1985. It transported thousands of desperate people westward during the Great Depression. The new businesses began to service on increasingly mobile public: motels, fast-food drive-ins, service stations, convenience stores, commercial strips, strip malls, shopping malls, parking lots, and drive-in theaters. A Federal Interstate Highway system had begun in 1956. In 1985, after the last segment had been bypassed by I-40 the year before, Rout 66 was decommissioned and passed into history.
