Until 90 million years ago, ocean covered from Rocky's to Appalachia. About 60 million years ago, this region began to rise. The uplift process raised some areas as much as 10,000 feet above sea level. Over millions of years, erosion stripped away many layers of rock. The uplifting of the part of the region, known as Colorado Plateau, caused the whole area to rise. In the area of Colorado Plateau, there are many National Parks (Petrified Forest N.P., Grand Canyon N.P., Zion N.P., Bryce Canyon N.P., Capitol Reef N.P., Canyonlands N.P., Arches N.P., and Mesa Verde N.P.) and National Monuments.
