Petroglyph National Monument, NM

It stretches 17 miles (27 km) along Albuquerque's West Mesa, a volcanic basalt escarpment that dominates the city's western horizon. It is only seven miles west of downtown Albuquerque.

A) There were 6 volcanic eruptions occurring about 130,000 years ago. The western boundary of the monument features a chain of dormant fissure volcanoes. Five volcanic cones.

B) The Monument protects and preserves one of the largest petroglyph concentrations in North America. It features more than 25,000 rock carvings by Ancestral Pueblo peoples and early Spanish settlers. Most images by Indians were made 400 to 700 years ago. Some images may be 2,000 to 3,000 years old. Beginning in the 1600s Hispanic heirs carved crosses and sheep brands. Other explorers in the 1800s chiseled their names and dates into the boulders.

It has 3 major areas to view the petroglyphs. Boca Negra(meaning the "black mouth") Canyon, Rinconada Canyon, & the Piedras Marcadas unit. Most require a long hike over unpaved areas to reach the artifacts. I saw petroglyphs in Boca Negra, and few in Rinconada.

Perhaps 90% of the petroglyphs in the monument were created using the Rio Grande style, which developed about A.D. 1300, and continued until the end of the 1600s. Images include human figures such as flute players or dancers; masks and masked figures; human hands and feet; animals including mountain lions, birds, serpents, reptiles, insects, and animal tracks; spirals, four-pointed stars, and geometric designs. No one can say for sure what many petroglyphs portray. Their meaning was, possibly, understood only by the carver.

C) Natural Setting: The volcanic escarpment contains sandy soils and a richer habitat than the surrounding desert landscape.

Plants: four-wing saltbush; sand sage; rabbitbrush, snakeweed; indigo bush; wildflowers, Indian ricegrass and other flowers and grasses.

Animals : hawks, owls, turkey vultures, roadrunners, flycatchers, and a wide variety of migratory birds; rabbits, snakes, lizards, and millipedes.

D) Cultural resources including hundreds of archeological sites.
