아코마 푸에블로, 또는 스카이 시티, Acoma Pueblo, or Sky-city, NM :

뉴멕시코 주의 앨버커키(Albuquerque)에서 서쪽으로 약 62마일 떨어져 있다. 367-feet (112 m) 높이의 사암으로 된 메사(mesa, 꼭대기는 평평한 바위언덕이고 주위는 벼랑인 지형)에 있기에 때로는 “스카이 시티, Skycity”라고 불린다. 서기 1100년경부터 인디언이 계속 살아온 곳으로 침략자들로부터 방어하기 좋은 조건을 갖춘 산 위의 마을을 형성했다. 하지만 1599년 스페인 군대가 쳐들어 왔을 때는 함락되고 말았다.

현재로는 50명도 되지 않은 아코마 인디언들이 스카이 시티에서 사계절에 걸쳐 살고 있고, 다른 인디언 들은 스카이시티 마을 밖에서 살며 중요한 행사 때는 스카이 시티에 돌아온다. 스카이시티에는 300채의 건물이 있는데, 대부분의 집은 여자가 소유한다. 그 후에 재산도 딸에게 물려준다. 17세기에 지은 아도비 벽돌로 지은 미국에서 제일 큰 성당의 하나인 가톨릭 성당 (San Esteban del Rey Mission and Convento)이 있다.

스카이시티 문화관 (Cultural Center)에 들러 박물관을 돌아보고, 인디언 가이드를 따라 관광버스를 타고 스카이 시티 메사를 구경했다. 길에 내 놓은 인디언 상품을 더러 사는 관광객도 있었다. 인디언 가이드의 영어가 약간 이해하기 곤란했고, 가이드는 수집어해서 그런지 머리를 내리고 설명했다. 스카이시티위에서 보는 경치는 아름답기만 했다.

∧∧∧ 스카이시티위의 집들. 이중에는 사다리를 타고 올라가게 만든 집들도 있다. 전기와 수도 같은 편리한 시설들이 없다.


∧ Horno : 소위 화덕 (oven)으로 인디언 여인들은 이곳에서 빵을 굽곤 했다. Horno: Is the outdoor adobe oven that is used mostly to bake bread and pastries by the Indian women.


∧ 스카이시티에 있는 가톨릭 성당. 여기에 쓰인 목제(木製)들은 30마일 북쪽으로부터 아코마 인디언들이 날라 왔다. San Esteban del Rey Mission and Convento. Building materials, including great log beams hand cut on Mount Taylor some 30 miles north, were carried to the summit by Acoman laborers.






∧∧∧∧ 스카이시티 근처와 스카이시티위에서 보는 경치, General scenery from Skycity.

Also known as "Sky City", is a Native American pueblo built on top of a 367-feet (112 m) sandstone mesa, and is located only 62 miles west of downtown Albuquerque. Built around A.D. 1100, it is one of the oldest continuously inhabited communities in the United States. The pueblo was chosen in part because of its defensive position against raiders. Access to the pueblo is difficult as the faces of the mesa are sheer. Before modern times access was gained only by means of a hand-cut staircase carved into the sandstone. Sky City has over 300 structures made of adobe (mud brick) and sandstone. The homes are owned by Acoma Pueblo females who pass them on to their youngest daughters. Acoma potters still make distinctive pottery. Fewer than 50 Acomans live in Sky City year-round today.

Here on Skycity, we saw San Esteban del Rey Mission and Convento, the 17th-century church. It was massive structure and still functioning. From the cultural center, we started our tour to Skycity on an Indian tour bus.
